Writer & Journalist

Hi there! I’m Zoë. I love performing improv, trying new things and spending time with my wildly affectionate dog, Milo. Here’s a recent picture of him enjoying a cool cup of water on a hot summer’s day.

I’ve been lucky enough to report over 100 articles about topics like health and education for more than a dozen local and national outlets, including Philadelphia Magazine, the Houston Press, Slate, the Atlantic and ProPublica. I especially loved working as a fellow with the Teacher Project, an education reporting team at Columbia University. There, I was able to collaborate with a trio of talented journalists on stories about things like early intervention for toddlers with autism and immigrant teenagers being denied their right to a public education. One of my pieces was even translated into Japanese! We worked really hard, and it paid off: after our ProPublica series on alleged student abuse published, the alternative school we covered lost a $6.4 million contract. Our work was recognized by the New York Press Club, the Newswomen’s Club of New York and the Education Writers Association. After that, I covered NYC schools during the Covid pandemic. The conversations I had with students, parents, teachers and administrators opened my heart and changed my life forever.

Mindfulness has always supported my journalism, and during that particularly challenging time, it became all the more important to me. Today, I try to apply the lessons I’ve learned from meditation — as well as the takeaways from my time in education reporting — to my second career as an author. I can’t wait for you to read Space, my first book of poetry, and to introduce you to Ruby, the hero of my first novel, a concept-driven fantasy romp for middle schoolers. Want to learn more?
